Warm up for the D-Backs at downtown restaurants

If you're headed to a game at Chase Field but are hungry for more than peanuts and popcorn, downtown neighborhoods offer more dining options than ever, from wine and cheese platters to massaman curry. Many are walking distance from the ballpark. Few accept reservations, and they can be busy on game day.

Here are a few spots to try on game day:

Thai Elephant

Owned by the same family that runs Thai Basil in Tempe and Phoenix, this restaurant specializes in traditional dishes such as fish cakes, massaman curry, Siamese basil with beef, yellow curry, Siam pork chop, pad Thai and drunken noodles. Most dishes are served with a choice of shrimp, pork, chicken or tofu.

Los Dos Molinos

This local favorite recently opened a location downtown, just blocks from the stadium. Los Dos is legendary for its fiery, New Mexican-style cuisine. But there's not only heat, there's flavor: adobada ribs, green chile enchiladas and beef tacos are lethal and thrilling.

Cheuvront Wine and Cheese Cafe

State Sen. Ken Cheuvront takes constituent service to a new level at his delightful cafe, just a short drive from Chase Field. Eat light and order one of the signature cheese platters. Or look for ancho pork empanadas, poached pear salad with walnuts and blue cheese, lamb loin rolled around bacon, spinach and figs and pissaladiere, French tarts topped with the likes of wild mushrooms and Gruyere.

Coach & Willie's

This spot just south of Chase Field has good pre- and postgame eats, including tequila lime chicken flatbread wrap, seafood fresca salsa, burgers, homemade pastas and a host of grilled sandwiches and salads. A real plus: french fries from fresh-peeled spuds.
